Using an SMPP Connection for SMS Messaging
The Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol (SMPP) is an open, very lightweight, efficient and high performance protocol for sending SMS messages. Some providers of SMPP can also offer short codes, premium messaging and other features. Connecting with SMPP allows a faster and higher volume of SMS messages to be sent, around 50 messages a second.MobileDataNow Requires the Following SMPP Features
- Version 3.4 of the SMPP protocol for sending messages over the same connection (Transceiver)
- Concatenated/long messages/multipart messages
- Two-way SMS
- Virtual mobile numbers

SMPP Providers
Below are a list of some providers of SMPP services in different countries. Some of these providers set monthly minimum volumes and have a small fee to setup. For most purposes, if you didn't want premium services and shortcodes, Hay Systems Limited www.hslsms.com would be a good choice as they connect directly to the providers, don't have monthly minimums and are one of the best priced for setup and messaging. HSL can also host your own SIM card virtually if you supply them with a SIM card.We can help you setup an account with HSL, but make sure your country is supported for incoming and outgoing sms.
Note: We have not tested Mobile Data Now with all of these providers, so please make sure when enquiring that they support the features required above.
The benefits of using a provider in your own country are they will be able to give you a local virtual mobile number/short code/premium sms messages. Otherwise you can use hslsms.com to host your SIM card in a virtual environment.
Regarding character sets, your SMPP provider will tell you what character sets it supports. GSM allows 160 Latin characters per message, ISO-8859-1 allows 140 Latin characters per message and Unicode 70 characters (Not yet supported in MobileDataNow - Arabic, Chinese, Russian etc)
