Version 2 released!

After a long 6 months of development (complete with hair pulling and head scratching) we're pleased to release version 2 of MobileDataNow.

It has many improvements including a completely new user interface which is much tidier than the old one. Other features such as web services and Linux support should be coming pretty soon afterwards as they're mostly implemented on the inside.

This version also fixes lots of small problems and inconsistencies that the earlier version suffered from, so we're pleased to get these all sorted out.

The new user interface

We just released a new beta version, with the new all singing, all dancing user interface.

It's much easier to use and faster too. Plus it gets rid of some annoyances and enhances the usability.

Some known issues which we'll fix:

lanaguage default not working, insert and update queries with custom query values not working, some issue with re-install using installation ID, some speed enhancements to the query builder, database migration to finish, some small GUI changes. Web services is in there, but not finished.

More progress

We're starting to make more progress and we should be able to release the next version of Mobile Data Now in 2 weeks time. It will have a completely new user interface, lots of bug fixes and some new features. As I mentioned before, we won't get web services in this build until Julie gets back early September, but then it won't be long after that and we can release it with web services.

Here's some full screen screenshots.

Web services progress and new website

Here's some of our progress with web services.

The Mobile Data Now web service implementation allows you to dynamically
inspect and invoke a web service. There is no need for any knowledge of
SOAP or coding to generate stubs or type serializers. Both simple and
complex type web services are supported.

Enter the WSDL url and Mobile Data Now dynamically invokes, creates the
code and presents an intuitive interface for querying web services.

1. Enter the WSDL url. (Excuse the strange looking elements)

1.40 Beta released

We're finally getting somewhere, and it hasn't been easy. I've just put a new beta release on the download page which supports SMPP, so now SMS messages can be sent super fast. SMPP was a pain to implement, and it didn't help that one of the providers we were using for testing turned out to be very unreliable.
Anyway, it works now so that's out of the way.

Some progress...

We're finally making some progress on the next version of Mobile Data Now.

Of course with software you don't really know what you're getting in to when you embark on adding new features, so things invariably end up taking longer than you expect.

SMPP Pricing

I've been investigating sms pricing when connecting to operators. We've implemented the SMPP protocol for direct connection to operators and aggregators. The Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol (SMPP) is an open, very lightweight, efficient and high performance protocol for sending SMS messages. It also means you can use short codes offered by the operators (that'll be another post).

1.3.2 released

Another release, this time with lots of bug fixes and improvements to the UI. Also we added the event log - all the messaging log activity to the UI so you don't have to open text files to see what's going on.

Another release (1.3.1)

We got another release out today, just some small but important bug fixes. First of all connecting to MS SQL 2005 - we had the URL slightly wrong and the queries didn't work with the way some of the tables were formatted. Also, we fixed a bug where timeouts in the GUI would happen with large amounts of tables and fields when creating a view.

Version 1.3 and CTIA thoughts

While at CTIA we released version 1.3 of MDN. It adds the ability to import and export your projects which is good for a couple of reasons.

1. It's a quick backup and you can import your project to another computer

2. We'll release a project library soon which lets you export settings for common CRM apps and other database based applications and share them so others can import them in to their projects and get started straight away.
